How to start your business step by step

Yes, I know. Starting a business is quite overwhelming. And most of the time, you still have a full time job, a part time job, are at home taking care of the children or are a student – all this means you cannot spend 8 hours a day on starting your business. It also takes time for businesses to take off. This was the same for me. I had a full time job when I started my Coaching business. I worked every lunch, every evening and weekend to get things going – until it was too much. I was lucky to find a part time job for a maternity cover which gave me some extra time to focus on  my business and get it going. Overall it took me 1.5 years to be fully operating with my business and having enough income from it to quit everything else I was doing.

The main thing is to have an overall goal but then to break it down into smaller goals, milestones, tasks, steps – whatever you want to call it. And just work you way through it step by step in the time you have and can afford to spend on it.

Here are some examples how to get started:

  • Make a list of everything you is involved in starting your own business
  • Put it in a logical order of working your way through the list – of course some things will happen simultaneously.
  • Calculate how much time you can spend everyday/week/month on your business
  • Make a plan of which tasks you can realistically do in the next 30 days, 3 months, 6 months and then a year

Here are some things to work through:

  • Goals
  • Values
  • Vision and mission
  • Who and what can help you
  • Motivation
  • Research
  • Your products and services
  • Pricing
  • Marketing
  • And much more

I developed an online course and also published a book that can help you with your start-up journey. It is called ‘The Start-Up Yearbook – a guide to document your start-up journey.’ In there you can find 52 challenges – to move forward with your business week by week for an entire year. It not only contains tasks related to your business but also to look deeper into your habits, work routine and taking time for yourself as well as productivity. Check out the additional resources below for more info. The free 30 day Kickstart Your Business Challenge is more for when you can really dedicate 30 days to kickstart your business. If you are looking more into starting bit by bit in a slower way over the year, I recommend the Start-Up Yearbook – book or online course that is part of the online community.
