6 steps to get started with your social media

Well, social media – part of almost everybody’s daily life. And for sure used for most businesses. But how should you use it? What should you post and how does it all work? It is not easy to create a one fits all solution, however, I have created The Social Media Formula for you that covers the basics you should do for all social media channels.

But do you actually need to use social media channels for your start up? The answer is: That depends! Where is your target audience? Do they use social media? Using social media for your business makes only sense if you also reach your target audience through it. And then you also don’t have to use all of the channels. There are a lot and there are news ones all the time.

Here is the Social Media Formula that will give you the basic understanding of creating a good foundation no matter which social media channel you use:

  • Define our target audience
  • Define your topics
  • What to post about
  • Creating posts
  • Posting content
  • Engage your audience

Define your target audience

This comes back to what I said above. Where is your target audience? What channels are they using? For this you need to define your ideal target audience and create an avatar. Find out what they like, what they struggle with, why they are interested in your product or service.

Define your topics

After you have defined your target audience and you know what they want to see on social media, you can create topics around that. If they are really busy people, maybe you want to post about time management tips for example and you will make sure that your posts are short and efficient. Define maybe a topic per month that you post about?

What to post about

This is actually what you will post about. What is the content. For example: top tips for the topic of the month, quotes, Videos – your own or YouTube videos, blog posts, articles and more.

Creating posts

Now you should start thinking about how you’re going to design your posts and create them. Create a unique look that fits your brand identity, using your colours, make the fit into the right size for each social media channel and use programmes that can help you with this. Canva for example has a great range of templates you can use.

Posting content

Once you created your posts, you can start thinking about how you will post them. And there are many options that will help you to do that in an efficient way such as Postcron, Buffer,  Later or Hootsuite. There are many more of course and you will have to find the right one for you.

Engage your audience

In this section you should think about what you can do to engage your audience. Have provoking posts, ask for people to comment by asking easy questions and use the right hashtags to attract new followers. You can also think about competitions that people can do to encourage engagement.
