How to prioritise tasks

Having a start-up can sometimes be overwhelming. There are so many things to do and they are never ending. Part of getting more things done is to be more productive. I have published a book which is called ‘The Productivity Formula – 6 steps that will make you more productive’. Part of being more productive is to know how to prioritise.

So how can you actually prioritize your tasks? Here are a few examples that can help you with it.

External deadlines

One thing might be external deadlines. You might have to get something done by a specific date that is not set by you but by your boss or a specific event that is happening on that date. You then have to get things done by then. There is no way to change this.

Third party

Another reason for prioritising tasks might be that it is not just you who is working on this task but a third party. And they need something from you before they can start. For example, if you have a website developer developing your website, he will need certain things from you (a briefing) before he can actually start working.

Things you don’t like

If you have a task that you really don’t like doing, you are more likely to procrastinate it. But what happens is that it is always in the back of your mind, nagging you and maybe even stressing you out, thinking ‘I still have to do this’. So why not tackle this particular task that you don’t like and just get it done. You will feel much better.

Quick tasks

And then there are the quick tasks. Something will take you two minutes to get done? Do it right there and then. No point putting it on a list.

There are a lot of priority models out there that you can use to prioritise tasks. I have created a few templates of models that you could use and download in the additional resources below.
