What Does It Take to Start Your Own Business

Starting up your own business is a great thing to do, but as we all know, it can be quite overwhelming. Below I will go over a few points, which I think it takes to start your own business. Please note that this is by no means a complete list.

When starting your own business it helps to be multi-talented or at least be willing (or let me rephrase that) eager to learn new things. There is a lot of work involved and it can bring financial insecurity with it.

As things might not always go exactly as planned, you will need passion to keep motivated and high levels of energy. Self-determination and problem solving skills are essential in my view. You need to be willing to make personal sacrifice and have a high-risk tolerance. Self-motivation and commitment should go hand in hand with curiosity and flexibility.

Other useful skills include networking skills and being organised. A supportive network is a must-have. This should be a mixture of business associates, family and friends, as well as external contacts that you have made at networking events.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all those skills yet. You can either learn them on the way or outsource things that you won’t be able to do or don’t want to do. Although ‘solopreneurs’ tend to do everything themselves, it is worth looking into what you can outsource.
